hey there fancypants!

bacon cheeseburger, fries and garlic mayo
from: The Pit
price: $6ish.
rating: &&&.5/&&&&&
listening to: ween.
comments: the photo of my burger will be played by Jason's veggie burger today. since I ate it before I thought about photographing it. it was way too hot in the pit today. I expect a dark dank place like that to be nice and cool. but no. it was crazy hot. I sweated more sweat than I drank beer. and greg sweated more beer than jason drank sweat. are you disgusted now? good.

beefneggonrice
from: Hong Kong Chinese
price: $5.30 (I think.)
rating: ????/&&&&& (he had to leave. I don't know his rating)
comments: eric is very protective of his food. and he drives a ford.

lookin' out on the morning rain. aa-oo. I used to feel so uninspired.

goat curry and mutter panneer
from: Curry Point
price: $5.87
rating: &&&&/&&&&&
listening to while eating: the police, ben harper, aretha franklin, UB40 (it's on random)
comments: the goat curry is not what I had last time. I'm confused. this goat tasted like goat. straight up. kinda like a beefy lamb. it's good. not as good as butter chicken, though. and definitely not as good as whatever I had last time I thought I was eating goat curry. it was more sausage-like. definitely no bones. I wonder what that was. has anyone else ever had what I'm talking about?

and Ed had:

Beef brisket stew on rice
from: Mom's cooking
price: Free
rating: &&&&/&&&&&
comments: ed said, "This beef brisket is a little different from what you get when you eat out. I think it's mainly the cut that is different as you don't get as much of the stringy effect. Mixed with the meat are potatoes, tomatoes, celery, and carrots cooked together. Sorry mom, I rarely give anything full marks. :)"
can you actually quote someone with an ascii happy face? I don't know. oh well. my blog. no rules. yadadada. thanks Ed!

I don't know what wrong with me, I think I'm turned into a bug.

3 items: pepper steak, some kinda spicy chicken and veggie, and sweet n sour pork
from: Yi Kou Xiang Foods
price: $4.82
rating: &&&&/&&&&&
listening to while eating: Paul Simon - graceland.
comments: good food. the pepper steak wasn't quite as good as it usually is. I don't think it was all that fresh. but everything else was very tasty. I'm thinking that Yi Kou Xiang is making it into the top tier. That's right. I think it's has moved itself into that top category where Curry Point, Osaka Sushi, HK Chinese exist. credit goes to Brendon Small for the song I stole for the linked movie.

and Jason had curry again, what a surprise!

veggie curries
from: curry point
price: $5.87
rating: &&&&/&&&&&
comments: Jason eats curry like a curry eating machine. he never stops. I don't know. maybe the veggie combo b girl somehow dissed him and that's why he won't go back there. maybe he's just crazy about the curry. and GOOD NEWS for curry lovers!! Curry Point has expanded their trays of foods. this means more curries! like goat curry! maybe I'll have to go tomorrow and get some goat. that'd sure get my goat.

and mad props to adam for the linked pic. I'll be using that for my photo class. adam rules.

dun dun dun da dada da da da da da dada dun dun etc (magnum theme)

tommy burrito
from: Steamrollers (far from here)
price: $7ish. pricey.
rating: &&&&.5/&&&&&
listening to while eating: Tricky. some newish album, "vulnerable"
comments: this Tommy is so good. they always are. they'd get &&&&& if they weren't so dang pricey. good thing I'm a zillionaire. it allows me to eat fancily. trés fancily. the picture here depicts my tommy watching magnum. he always watches magnum. too bad he's only got a b&w tv. oh wait... no more magnum for him, I ate him all up.

and greg c had:

bbq leftovers - chicken, zuccini, steak and rice.
from: greg's bbq
price: n/a
rating: &&&&/&&&&&
comments: greg said that the zuccini tastes better today than it did yesterday. shocking. he also said, "I loves me some bbq, the smokiness, the burning, it makes me feel like fire was discovered just for me fondness for the burned meat. Veggies marinated in balsamic/olive oil mix, pepper. chicken in thai aromatic grill, steak in montreal steak spice." now, if it were my lunch, I don't think I would eat it all up right away. afterall, how often does one get a chicken leg with magnum's eyebrows and mustache on them? that should go straight to eBay if you axe me. oh, this just in, greg also says, "bbq tip: Once the chicken skin is looking good, get a piece of foil and cook the chicken on it, so it cooks fully without burning the outside" so maybe he just got the facial hair from the foil. if he had magnum over for dinner and didn't call me, I'll kill him.

we'd like to know a little bit about you for our files

wontons and noodles in soup
from: A-1 Vietnamese (Korean spicy place)
price: $4.02+tax
rating: &&&.5/&&&&&
listening to: Mrs. Robinson as covered by the lemonheads.
comments: man, this is a lot of noodles. there were about 5 wontons. and a buncha slices of beef. I think I waited too long before eating it, as there was virtually no liquid. I felt like I moved to Noodleopia. wow. ok, now I talk about the link... this is a very special day. the start of a new blog! and I don't have to do all the work on this blog, everyone does. if you wonder what this craziness is that I speak of, just click the noodles and find out!!

salad roll
from: A-1 Vietnamese (Spicy Korean place)
price: $5.25+tax
rating: &&&.5/&&&&&
comments: erin says "there wasn't enough dippin' sauce. they don't give as much as they used to. and the rolls are a bit smaller than they used to be. overall, they were ok." and something I noticed was that the rolls are pre-made now. I didn't think they used to be. but I saw the mysterious hands in the kitchen putting pre-rolled salad rolls in the container.

somebody say ih-ih-ih-ih-ih, somebody cry hello hello hello

19a - some sweet chicken, noodles and rice
from: Hong Kong Chinese
price: $4.82
rating: &&&.5/&&&&&
listening to: Paul Simon - Graceland
comments: lunch in the park. even though bucket couldn't make it. I gotta remember to order cold food when I'm going to eat under the hot sun. the food was good. very tasty chicken. the noodles and rice were ok, too, but nothing out of the ordinary. what is out of the ordinary is this exceptional photo. I've impressed myself with this one.

3 items - tofu, chicken, and asparagus
from: Yi Kou Xiang Foods
price: $4.82
rating: &&&.5/&&&&&
comments: Meg says, "normally there is more rice, over all ok." and that's all she says. greg thinks we should add something about asparagus and interesting smell it makes later. but I think we should add something about bumping into rada at the park, and how she showed us how to pick grass with toes. or maybe I'll comment on how r. has already commented on today's entry and I haven't finished updating yet. he already knows what I'm listening to. he's psychic like that.

kkccssshkcrrrc ckshhhrrrrthhhhhhrk (transformer transforming sound)

butter chicken, chickpeas n yoghurt curry
from: curry point
price: $5.87
rating: &&&/&&&&&
listening to: Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain.
comments: basically, the chickpeas were too dry. otherwise, the usual curry. now, let's talk about the link. I implore all lunchatthevillage blog viewers to help me and bucket win some prizes in the ernie ball contest. please vote for us. I bet we won't win, but hey, why not try? so please do this for us. and if you feel like it, you can listen to the song again and keep our numbers climbing. just make sure you let it play all the way through. or else it won't count it. and don't do it from work. well, from my work. it only counts the IP once.

and Gord had (please note, the 'r' is silent):

"arroz con pollo", a traditional Peruvian dish which translates simply to "rice with chicken"
from: Melody made it. She lived in Peru for a year or so and makes a few Peruvian recipes.
price: n/a (home cookin')
rating: &&&/&&&&&(5 being mucho deliciouso)
comments: Gord (silent r) says, "Kinda plain. Not enough spice for me. Someone put fish in the microwave earlier today. Stunk up the office. But I don't think the flavour invaded my lunch."

I don't know karate, but I know karage!

flavoured stirfry with noodles
from: Yi Kou Xiang Foods
price: $5.62
rating: &/&&&&&
listening to: Bob Marley earlier, now U2 - 'Live Under a Blood Red Sky' - such a good album!
comments: before you order this stirfry, you gotta ask yourself one question... "do you like cumin?" well, do you, punk?? if you do, and I mean _really_ like it, then order it. I think it's about 90% cumin. I don't mind cumin. but this is ridiculous! I've decided to just let this lunch answer my phone. since I ain't gonna eat it, it might as well do something useful! and on a side note, it looks like Jacky had carrots for lunch. :)

and Sim had:

Chicken Karage with Miso Soup
from: Honor Roll (in the sub)
price: $5.45 ($3.95 for Chicken Karage)
rating: &&&/&&&&&
comments: "[I] Passed by John Casinader with a new Mac Mini he just bought from the UBC Bookstore…" Sim also said "Beware the big black rotweiller called Gwilli lurking around the corner trying to find a chance to steal your chow…"

wake up this morning, smiled at the risin' sun

giant mushroom, noodles, rice, chicken
from: John and Mei's wedding. the Wus. or the Wu's. which looks better?
price: priceless.
rating: &&&&&/&&&&&
listening to: Bob Marley.
comments: this meal wasn't quite a &&&&& lunch, but for 2 reasons, I give it this rating: a)it was free. b)it was a &&&&&+ last night when it was fresh. there was so much good food. delicious. yum. uh-huh. yippee. yahoo. ok, I'm done.

there's no guest lunch today. I don't feel like it. and guess what?... MY BLOG! NO RULES!!! WHOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOO! but you still get a secret link. sweeeeeet link...

He's lovin' it!

a very special weekend update to the blog... that's right, on June 19th, 2005, John Wu... ate McDonalds for lunch. so did I. thanks to him.

oh yeah, and congrats on getting married.

Friday, June 17, 2005

you know the one... Dr. Everythinggonnabealright

3 items - sweet and sour chicken, pork ball & snow peas
from: Yi Kou Xiang Foods
price: $4.82
rating: &&&&.5/&&&&&
listening to while eating: Prince - Let's go crazy (also Hey Ya and Orinoco Flow)
comments: this meal really hit the spot today. yum-city! that pork ball is sooooo good. and I had half rice / half noodles. it's still a heckuvalottafood. and the secret link is my newest online photo gallery. this gallery will celebrate 16th avenue in all its greatness. enjoy.

and Ali had (note: all HIS words):

9A: Szechuan chicken?
from: Hong Kong Chinese (aka HKC)
price: $4.82 (tip the change you bastard) -> 5$ even
rating: &&&&&/&&&&&
comments: If you are starving, Hong Kong Chinese is the place to eat. Providing more food than you can eat without having to take a afternoon nap. I have not yet weighed the food, but my arm is sore by the time I get back to webct. They give you rice and noodles, so one day you could just eat the rice, the other just the noodles. Two dishes in one!

Thursday, June 16, 2005

and we drove... on a wet and windy road to the coast...

beef n tofu + salty fish and chicken fried rice
from: Hong Kong Chinese
price: $5.30 for tofu $7ish for saltyfish
rating: &&&&/&&&&&
listening to: Hefner - The Hefner Brain
comments: erin got the beef and tofu, and I got the salted fish and chicken fried rice. I love this stuff. it is soooooooo good. erin's not happy with the tofu. says there's not enough sauce, but since I don't have that dish very often, I think it's incredible. maybe erin doesn't like it as much as usual because there's too much geodry kitchen in it.

and Greg C had:

Veal Steak with brown rice and broccoli
from: home
price: n/a
rating: &&&.5/&&&&&
comments: greg says, "two words: gray veee, this sucker needed it, lots of it. the first bite was excellent but after that it got a little bland for me, next time I sacrifice a young animal I shall demand it be seasoned."

---------------a very special PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT!!!---------------

this link is important. I need your support. everyone can help here. I've linked to the BC Liquor store webpage (twice!!) where you can comment. I've already commented, and I implore you to do the same. comment about what you ask? well, the liquor store at 39th and Cambie has gotten rid of their beer coolers. this is stupid. those beer coolers are important. they make buying cold beer fun and affordable. so, if you can, please send them a complaint about this. if enough people complain and threaten to shop at beer and wine stores, then maybe they'll get the coolers back.

I had this dream... where I relished... relish

cheese steak
from: Subway (Oak and 24th)
price: $7.19+tax
rating: &&&/&&&&&
listening to while eating: Tragically Hip - Day for Night. haven't heard this stuff in ages.
comments: I've probably only ever had a &&&&& sub from subway once or twice. they can be good, but rarely THAT good. this one was pretty average. the bread was floppy. the toastedness was nice, though. I like that. and the banana peppers were a nice touch. all subways should have those. but what I don't understand is that "subway" flavour? I've never had a sub from elsewhere that tastes like a subway sub, and I've never had a subway sub without that distinct subway flavour. someone explain this mystery to me!!

no guest lunch today. I ate lunch pretty late, so most people had already finished. and erin ate her sub in the car. so here's a picture of the baby stickbugs that hatched today or yesterday. stickbugs are so cute when they're babies.

all walls are great if the roof doesn't fall

Tommy Burritto
from: Steamrollers (next to London Drugs on Broadway.)
price: I forget... it was like $17 for two.
rating: &&&&.7/&&&&&
listening to now: Bjork. She's seen it all.
comments: I've only had a couple items from SteamRoller's before. and the Tommy is definitely my favourite. I should try it with beef sometime.

Another Tommy. (can you hear me?)
same
same
rating: &&&&&/&&&&&
comments: Erin likes Tommys. even when she is sick. she gives it a five for two reasons: a)she didn't pay for it. b)it's nice and big, not like last time she had one and it was skinny and lame.

Monday, June 13, 2005

Tony Parsons for Mayor!

butter chicken and yoghut curry. with lime coke!
from: Curry Point
price: nothin. I filled my card.
rating: &&&&/&&&&&
listening to while eating: metallica. that's strange for me.
comments: same old curry. I can barely eat it, though. it filled me up at the halfway point. but more importantly than curry is the video clip that I've secretly linked to. props out to meighan for that.

and Jason had:

peas, cheese, pakoras and yoghurt.
from: where do you think?
price: $5.87
rating: &&&&/&&&&&
comments: jason eats this everyday. he has no comments. so let's talk about the pizza he made at 1am on the weekend. from scratch by the look of things. what crazy monkey.

Friday, June 10, 2005

my friend Goo just goes PEEYOOOO!

Bacon Cheesebuger with fries.
from: The Pit
price: $6 or so
rating: &&&/&&&&&
listening to right now: the Beatles, Sgt Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band
comments: the burger was fine. the service was lame. 3 people who ordered burgers and fries after me got their meals before me. mnyeah. whatever. it was fun to drink beer. and I got to see Erwin Tang!!! at the Pit. that was cool. Erwin is great. and he just had a mucous seal removed. ar! ar! ar!

BLT Sandwich with Clam Chowder
from: the Delly
price: I don't know. Erin's busy right now
rating: &&&&/&&&&& (I'm assuming. if I'm wrong, she'll probably correct me in the comments)
comments: check the comments section for Erin's comments. otherwise, I'd like to mention that we saw the baby skunks on the way to the SUB. in the linked picture, you can see the little white stripes down their noses. cute. but probably stinky. my friend Goo just goes PEEYOOOO!

Thursday, June 09, 2005

1 lunch, 2 lunch, red lunch, blue lunch.

penne pasta special
price: $6
rating: &&&&/&&&&&
comments: today, there's 4 lunches. all from the Pendulum at the SUB. I think all the lunches were $6. so I'll skip that info on the following reviews. of course this didn't include the price of the beer. I'm not sure how much that was. anyway, the pasta special was pretty good. it tasted just how it looked. and very filling.

and erin had:

soup and sandwich special
comments: "consisted of lettuce, grilled chicken, tomato, and green pepper on sesame toast. included chips and tomato soup with veggies and noodles. all toasted sandwiches are delicious, hence this gets &&&&/&&&&&."

and jason had:

Veggie Baguette
comments: "Quite tasty. Consisted of green leaf lettuce, sprouts, tomato, green pepper, gouda, and dijon mustard on a toasted chunk of baguette. Included a garden salad. All toasted sandwiches are delicious, hence this gets &&&&/&&&&&"

and greg had:

Burrito
comments: "Quite tasty. Consisted of green leaf lettuce, sprouts, tomato, green pepper, gouda, and dijon mustard on a toasted chunk of baguette. Included Beans.
All toasted sandwiches are delicious, hence this gets &&&&/&&&&&"
(I think he's lying, because he didn't even mention the chorizo)

Ladies and Gentleman, we are floating in space...

beef n egg on rice, spicy to go.
from: Hong Kong Chinese Food
price: FREE!!! I filled my customer appreciation card.
rating: &&&&/&&&&&
listening to while eating: Spiritualized
comments: good stuff. I love the beef n egg on rice. and I went so late that there was no line up. I was the only customer. the guy made my food in about 2 minutes. fast food. very. and I went to the bookstore, too. I had never seen the vending machine outside of it. amazing. for those students who need a blank DVD at 3am.

and Erin had:

red bean sticky rice
from: pine house bakery (42nd and Victoria)
price: $2.50
rating: &&&&/&&&&&
comments: erin says, "the dark orange stuff in the middle is a little too grainy for my taste. it's a weird texture and i can't tell what it tastes like. the red beans are nice, but a little too much. next time, i'll go for the plain sticky rice wrap. but overall, a good deal. i'm full and it was less than $3." personally, I had some other baked good from this bakery. quite yummy, I say!

Tuesday, June 07, 2005

the dark side of the curry

butter chicken and yoghurt curry
from: Curry Point
price: $5.87
rating: &&&&.4/&&&&&
listening to while eating: pavement.
comments: delicious curry, as usual. extra good today, in fact. and good news for you curry lovers! while talking to the guy serving my food, he informed me that they are planning on extending their selection of curries!! 6 more trays, he says! very exciting. more options. he says they'll try to have goat curry more often for me. yum. if you ever get a chance to, I say "try the goat! you'll like it!" unless you're from Vegetaria (like Jason) or Vega. then you'll just never know the joy of goat.

and oleg had:

instant udon soup
from: Costco
price: about $1.50
rating: &&&&/&&&&&
comments: Oleg has this to say about his instant udon, "No comments"
but I have more to say! unrelated to his lunch. if you've found the secret link, then you go a chance to see how Master Yoda made me richer! thanks Yoda!

Monday, June 06, 2005

Then we would cook cornmeal porridge,

3 items
from: Yi Kou Xiang Foods
price: $4.82
rating: &&&&/&&&&&
listening to while eating: Bob Marley and Talking Heads. not together. separately.
comments: good lunch. good value. what can I say? why don't I go here everyday? not sure. it's always good. it's always a lot of food. for that price you get three items, rice and/or noodles (today I had half rice/half noodles - yum), and a pop or soup. it's great. I usually feel too full after eating it. maybe that's why I don't have it more often. plus, the village is all about variety. well, for everyone except Jason "Mutter-Paneer" Cragg, that is.

the usual anonymous had:

curry wrap
from: The Delly
price: $4.25 (inc tax!)
rating: $$$.5/$$$$$
comments: Hiroko has rating her food with $ signs. it goes against my usual ampersand rating theme, but I'll let it slide. Here's what she had to say about her lunch: " [it was] recommended by the Elusive. Mike tried a Chicken Teriyaki wrap this time and said chicken curry wrap is better. If I can heat through to the center without making scorching hot at the perimeter, the rating may have been improved… I still have a slice of apple strudel from Delly in my bag, hehehe." she also said "Anything is too much for a sturving student with tons of student loan... I guess it is fairly reasonable for food you get from student union building."

Friday, June 03, 2005

watch out. you might get what you're after.

smoked meat sandwich
from: the Delly
price: $5.25
rating: &&&&/&&&&&
listening to while eating: Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense
comments: good sandwich. good beer. that's all. it's friday. help me, Rhonda. and they were filming some movie or something at the outdoor pool. I didn't recognize the kid in the movie, but maybe you will.

Greg and Meg both had:

Mozza Burger and fries
from: The Pit
price: $4.95 (after tax)
rating: &&&&/&&&&&
comments: it was good. the beer was good. the fries were good. the ambience was mnyeh. now here's the whole clip that they were filming with the little kid.

Thursday, June 02, 2005

it's like a drunken punch-up at a wedding.

lemongrass chicken soup
from: A-1 Vietnamese and Korean Spicy place
price: $5.00 (after tax)
rating: &&&&/&&&&&
listening to while eating: still Radiohead.
comments: this soup is exactly like all their pho. but this one comes with fried chicken in it. not bad chicken. not as good as the terriyaki chicken because I had to pick it off the bones. but still tasty. and somehow not too soggy.

veggie terriyaki, with a tri-Viv.
from: Osaka Sushi
price: $4.50 + tax
rating: &&&.5/&&&&& (for a meatless food)
comments: eric only had $5 on him. he settled for meatless food. but he didn't really want to. he should have had what I had. good chicken.
note: the Vivs weren't actually part of the meal. that would have cost much more.

New Month = New Turtle (on my calendar)

beef and egg on rice, spicy, to go.
from: Hong Kong Chinese
price: $5.30
rating: &&&/&&&&&
listening to while eating: Radiohead, Hail to the Thief.
comments: my battery on my camera died, so I drew my lunch in a messenger conversation with the Usual Anonymous. I think I ate too much at breakfast. I'm just too full and I'm only 1/2 way through my beefneggonrice. I discovered something great, this morning when I ate my leftover pizza that I forgot to eat yesterday. You know how the pizza places often give dipping sauce for the crusts now? well, I discovered the best pizza crust dipping sauce ever. Baba Ganouj. seriously. it is so good with the pizza crust. and that's all I got to say about it.

and Craig had:

chicken caesar pita
from: Pita Pit
price: $5.92
rating: &&&&/&&&&&
comments: as you can see, Craig is luke skywalker and the pita is his severed hand. get it? no. I didn't think so. but what's more interesting is his shirt. it appears to be made out of Jenna's lunch. Click it to see more. and since this lunch is shown, it too, shall be reviewed:
2 items - very shiny items
from: Combo Express
price: ???
rating: &&.5/&&&&&
comments: it was nothing special.
