her name is Yoshimi. She's a blackbelt in Karate.

Box C
from: Osaka Sushi
price: $7.44
rating: &&&&/&&&&&
listening to: flaming lips - yoshimi battle the pink robots
comments: box C rules. the variety makes is a phenomenal lunch. the over $7 price tag, makes it too rich for my blood. but once in a while, I can afford to live that way. today, sunlight was reflected off the building across the road and flooded my desk. what a nice treat. however, it pointed out how dirty my keyboard is. so dirty. vee dot dirty. I often think we should have a dirty keyboard contest at work. the sad part is that I don't think I'd win. yikes.

and Jason had:

curry. what else? a Key Lime Soda. I think I'll have him review the soda.
Stewart's Key Lime Soda (Stewart's Soda à La Limette)
from: Student Lucky Mart
price: $2.02 after tax & deposit
rating: &&&&/&&&&&
comments: Jason says, "Tasty lime soda, I drank it pretty quickly, so it must've been good. There's also a warning on the back that reads 'Contents under pressure. Bottle may burst or cap may blow off causing eye or other serious injury. Point away from face and people, especially while opening.' Now that's a powerful soda."

there's an old man sittin next to me, makin love to his tonic and gin (no, not eric)

3 items
from: Northern Foods (Yi Kou Xiang Delicious Foods)
price: $4.82
rating: &&&&/&&&&&
listening to: Billy Joel
comments: I never noticed before, but Yi Kou Xiang also has signs that says "Northen Foods." I'm not sure what the place is really called, then. I asked the guy who I think runs the place, but he's not very talkative. oh well. what's the big news in the 'Couve today? snow. yay!! can't wait until after work to go do some handbrake slides. wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

and Stojan had:

Curry chicken with zucchini on rice
from: Curry POint
price: "$5.5 (if you say that you don’t want to pay for pop, otherwise its the $5.87 combo)"
rating: &&&.5/&&&&&
comments: I didn't take a very good picture of Stojan's lunch. therefore... Superbee!!! and about his lunch, Stojan says,
"Zucchini should be less hot.
They should serve a bit more chicken.
Should be more salty.
Other than that tastes good.
Makes you sleepy after you devour it"

na na-na na na... HEY! na na na na...

meatball sub
from: Sauron (actually subway, but jason said sauron)
price: $6.09
rating: &&&/&&&&&
listening to: irrelevant. the title refers to the 2nd link today. not my music.
comments: meatball sub. I've never had one of these from Subway before. well, not that I can remember. and for good reason, too. it wasn't that good. the meatballs were rather tasteless. I woulda been better off with a veggie sub. a buck cheaper, and not much different in taste.

and yesterday I had:

greek pasta salad
from: starbucks
price: $6.something
rating: &&.5/&&&&&
comments: I had a late lunch today, so no guest lunch. everyone was finished. oh well. here's my lunch from yesterday. it was fairly tasty, but for six bucks, it really didn't fill me up. I also don't think lettuce has a place in greek pasta salad.

I'm ready and hyped plus I'm amped

steak sandwich with fries
from: thunderbar
price: between 9 & 10 bucks
rating: &&&&.4/&&&&&
listening to: Public Enemy
comments: mmmm... steaky goodness. I should eat steak more. why do I avoid it? cuz it costs too much. but it's so good. I didn't know this about steak sandwiches, but they only have one piece of bread. I asked the guy why it had no roof, he said they never have roofs. like tuna melts, he said. hmm.. then why call it a 'sandwich' I wonder? to me, the definition of sandwich is 'a couple slices of bread with stuff in the middle'. is that not accurate?

and jenna had:

BLT with side caesar
from: Thunderbar
price: $7.50
rating: &&&&/&&&&&
comments: jenna says, "the BLT sandwich is delicious. but i wasn't that hungry when we went for lunch, so i couldn't finish the salad. also, the 2/3 cup beer was filling too." and now go look at jason with his chookies!

I'm sure that I could be a movie star, if I could get out of this place.

baconcheeseburger with fries n beer n garlic mayo
from: the pit
price: the food was $6.10
rating: &&&&/&&&&&
listening to: billy joel.
comments: it's hard to rate anything with beer under a &&&&. the pit burger is a good bit of food. not amazing, but good. solid. I like it. and beer is always delicious except when it's not, but that's generally never. unless you tap into a bad keg or something, like jason and jim did in mexico. they had me livin in fear, thinkin that all beer will start tasting like eggs. yikes.

and Reagan had:

mushroom burger with fries n beer
from: The Pit
price: just over $5
rating: &&&.5/&&&&&
comments: yeah. a bunch of us had lunch with Reagan, as he's back in town. he works for a company that makes products for rock stars, but he doesn't meet them. here's what he had to say about lunch, "the mushrooms were fresh and the wheat bun had a most satisfying texture! and the patty was, umm, did I mention the mushrooms were fresh! and the wheat bun.... and the beer! oh the beer!!! and my friends were there. the time spent was pleasurable and if rated would score highly i hope. I would like to drink beer there again with my friends in the near future." when I asked what was up with the patty, he replied, "i dunno.... being from Texas it's hard not to be a beef snob to some degree. the time spent was fab, and i did eat the whole thing, and the fries were tasty so 3 out of 5 for the food and 5 out of 5 for the atmosphere"

I'm the same, as I was when I was 6 years old

beefneggonricespicytogo
from: Hong Kong Chinese
price: $5.30
rating: &&&/&&&&&
listening to: Modest Mouse
comments: disappointing beef n egg today. I shoulda not ordered it. I knew. I saw the regular chef sitting there reading the paper. that meant he wasn't cooking. bah. the other guy did a decent enough job, but the rice wasn't very good. it tasted old. ub tyou can still click the pic. and it will show you all the states I've been in/through. you can go here if you want to make your own map. There's a world one, but for me it doesn't look very visited compared to america.

and anny had:

beef flavoured instant noodles
from: T&T metrotown
price: $.59
rating: &&&/&&&&&
comments: anny said, "It tastes better if you cook it in a pot on a stove, and then add an egg." now click the pic to see a picture of her house.

the workers are go-ing home!!

3 items - fish, pork, chicken
from: Yi Kou Xiang Delicious Foods
price: $4.82
rating: &&&&/&&&&&
listening to: weezer
comments: tasty food. but I'm really not hungry today. I still have half my food leftover. and I'm nibbling at it. is that bad? I bought it 4 hours ago. in today's linked pics, you will see how foggy it is in Vancouver lately. or will you? same picture. which one is accurate? tell me.

and erin had:

sandwiches
from: The Delly
price: $9.45 - but that was for 2 sandwiches
rating: &&&&.5/&&&&&
comments: erin saysm, "I'm not sure how much because I bought Rada's sandwich for her today. Mine was a regular BLT and it was decent with lots of bacon. But the bacon is hard to bite through so sometimes I end up with a huge mouthful of bacon that ends up stripping the rest of the sandwich. Rada's sandwich, on the other hand, was something I've never seen before (though it's on the menu)... avocado and shrimp. What a strange combination. Altogether, both sandwiches were $9.45. It must've been good since she was done her sandwich much quicker than mine."

they're widening easy street to fit more SUVs

lemongrass shredded pork with porkchop on rice, and a spring roll, or soemthing like that.
from: Au Petit Cafe at 33rd and Main
price: dunno. erin didn't look at the prices. I think mine was about $12.
rating: &&&&.5/&&&&&
listening to: Desaparecidos
comments: thanks to erin from bringing so many of us lunch today. it was really good. and now I'm really full. this little place makes great food. if you're ever in the area... it's right across Main from Duffin's Donuts. but then again... if you're in that area you should try the Hot Torta Subs from Duffins. so good. too many options. it's probably best to stay away from that area and leave all the food for me.
oh yeah! in other bloggy news.. click the gijoe pic above. you'll see my cup o coffee featured on a stranger's blog! well, not totally a stranger. I did send the pic to him.

and erin had:

#1 sandwich
from: Au Petit Cafe
rating: &&&&.5/&&&&&
comments: erin says, "i think they forgot the hot peppers this time, but other than that, it was delicious - still warm even after driving half an hour to work with it, lots of housemade ham and meatballs, a little lacking on the veggies, but there was plenty o filling with the meat. spring rolls were tasty as usual, though a little soggy by the time i got to work."
(oh yeah... did y'all buy globe and mails on the weekend? get your glasses? think you look as good in them as the guy in the linked pic? if you do, send me a pic of you wearing them and I'll blog it, yo.)

hungryman sub (1 pound!)
from: 7-11
price: $6.69+the tax
rating: &&&/&&&&&
listening to: Neil Young
comments: yet another sunday lunch. today I stopped at 7-11 on the way in and picked up this 1 pound sandwich. actually, it's more than a pound. and very nutritious! just click on the pic and see for yourself. yup. over 100% of some nutrients! fat is a nutrient, right?

pack up the babies, grab the old ladies!

thunder chicken and bzzr
from: the thunderbar. who else would serve a thunderchicken?
price: I forget. I reached in my wallet and it was empty, so greg gave me a 20.
rating: &&&&/&&&&&
listening to: Neil Diamond
comments: it was a thunderchicken. that means it was good. because the name is good. when I was younger, we used to call Firebirds 'firechickens'. so it was nostalgically delicious. in other news... everyone should buy a Globe and Mail tomorrow. Saturday. why? because you will get free 3D glasses. then you can properly view the picture I linked to. and future 3D pictures that I will post. There's quite a few on flickr.com that you'll get to enjoy as well. go get it.

and Jason had:

v3ggi3 burg3r with fr13s
fr0m: the thund3rbar
pr1ce: 7 bucks-ish?
rating: &&&.5/&&&&&
comments: Jason says, "too full to finish, too many fries, beer was Rickards, but that's not our fault, the selection at the Thunderbar is kind of limited. I'm tired from ch'p'ups." and the linked picture is amazing. it seems that someone built San Frandisco out of jello. yeah. jello.

singing sweet songs, of melodies pure and true

butter chicken and spinach curry
from: Curry Point
price: $5.87
rating: &&&&/&&&&&
listening to: Bob Marley and Peter Tosh. all day.
comments: the curry place was out of samosas, hot sauce AND yoghurt curry when I got there. iyiyiyi! but it worked out anyway. because I tried the spinach curry again. and it's really good. I felt a little ill this afternoon, but i'm not sure if it was brought on by curry or what.

and May had:

butter chicken and peas and potatoes
from: curry point
price: free! greg bought her lunch.
rating: &&&&/&&&&&
comments: May is leaving Canada tomorrow. she's been living under greg for quite a long time. so, to say goodbye, she came all the way out to UBC to have lunch with us. unfortunately, my personal beliefs do not allow me to actually eat IN the village. so I left her with jason, greg and nicole. too bad it wasn't warm enough to eat in the park. oh well. bye may. here's what she had to say about her meal: "Perhaps shouldnt have got the potato as it hit my stomach like a tonne of bricks. Now I feel very sick. But it could have been the caramel machiato." Maybe it was the butter chicken? hmmm....

special documentary:
stupid alarm going offcowboy writing ticketcowboy taking photo of car - I guess they document toogreg looking at ticketbye bye
today we saw a car parked on the sidewalk across the road from us. and its alarm was going off. so, I went out to take pics, and a campus cowboy said we didn't need to worry, he was on it. watch the saga unfold with my photo documentary. unfortunately, we didn't get to see the driver come out looking all confused. oh well.

cheesybasonyburger with fries n garlic mayo
from: the Regal Beagle
price: about $15 with a beer.
rating: &&&.5/&&&&&
listening to: the great music at the regal bagel. mostly classic rock, but with great surprises like, "I changed my mind"
comments: I had lunch with an old friend today. it was good. I like drinking beer. the food was nothing special, but it was good to see john and good to drink beer. yay!

and John had:
geeze damn. click it.
chicken salad sandwich with fries n dip
price: about $15 with beer
comments: john hasn't replied to my emails about reviewing his lunch. maybe he'll review it in the comments? I doubt it. either way, he's got a golden lab puppy. more a youth, than a puppy. wanna see?

the fraser and kingsway vietnamese sandwich showdown!!!!

three of us tried three different vietnamese sandwiches (bahn mi) from three different stores at the kingsway/fraser intersection. Here's the results:

from: Bale French Sandwich shop.
price: $2.25+tax
comments: this place is usually very good. although, today, we rate it the lowest. It did seem to have most meat, but to me, it tasted really dry. eric bit into a hot pepper that was extremely hot, but neither r. nor I had any in ours. odd. they also didn't use black pepper, which the other places used well. also, the bread was not as good or fresh tasting as the other places. but greg says that we should have really gotten the "number 5" which is 50 cents more, and double the meat.
rating: 3rd place.

from: Co Hong Vietnamese Sandwich and Deli Shop
price: $2.50 ( I think? - not sure because r. bought these ones)
comments: this place was interesting. as I sat at the empress bakery waiting for my sandwiches, some guy ran in, bought a bunch of buns and ran out. my first thought was that it was the guy from Co Hong getting the buns for r.'s sandwiches. I was right. that's exactly what was happening. the sandwich itself was a little different. tons of black pepper. no paté. and what seemed to be roast beef as the meat. interesting. r. picks this sandwich as his fave.
rating: 2nd place.

from: Empress Bakery / Sandwich and Deli
price: $2.25 +tax
comments: the good ol' empress. this is my usual place for these subs. and it turns out, it is also the victor of this showdown. unfortunately, they didn't use the delicious garlicy-buttery stuff again. if they had, they could have blown their competitors out of the water. instead, they just eked by, getting both eric's and my vote for best sandwich. It hink this one was too spciy for r. though. the peppers are pretty hot.
rating: 1st place!

number threehundredeightyeight huge crybaby mcweepy

sandwich and soup
from: The Delly (in the SUB)
price: $7.75
rating: &&&&.4/&&&&&
listening to: a man reading a list of 700 hobo names
comments: the sandwich (Mtl. smoked beef on hoagie) was terrific today. as usual. the Delly always does good sandwiches. the soup, however, not so good. lobster bisque sounds good, and should be good. but it wasn't that great. I think I knew this. I think I had it before. In fact, I could probably look back through my blog to find out that it isn't that good. oh well. enjoy the 700 hoboes. and I will enjoy the thing I got in the mail today... can you tell what it was?? look beyond the lunch...

and dave had:

teriyaki chicken, tempura, california roll combo
from: Osaka Sushi
price: $6 and change
rating: &&.5/&&&&&
comments: Dave said, "I had enough stamps on my card to get free curry point, but the line was stupid long. This lunch loses anywhere from .5 to 1 points just for not being free curry point."
and in an unrelated lunch... I accidentally asked another Dave for his lunch review today, even though I have no picture. so, here's Dave B's lunch review:
Butter chicken and Mixed Vegetables.
$5.87
Curry Point
&&.5/&&&&&
Curry Point’s butter chicken has been going down hill for the past few months. I blame it on the addition of the heat lamps. It changes the flavour of the food somehow. What used to be a staple of my diet is strongly being reconsidered. Some of the flavour that I’ve come to expect or perhaps the spice just hasn’t been there recently.

how's it goin' 2000man?

2 vietnamese sandwiches
from: the Empress Bakery (kingsway and fraser)
price: $4.82
rating: &&&&/&&&&&
comments: only gets 4/5 today because I coudln't taste the garlic buttery stuff. perhaps it's garlic butter? I couldn't taste it this time. not sure if there was any in them. sure were good, though.

special dinner blog!

the chanaples 4th wedding festivity.

the thrill and clarity of sound

ginger beef 'n curry vermicelli
from: Ginger and Chilli (West 10th)
price: $7.50 for the ginger beef, anyway
rating: &&&&.4/&&&&&
listening to: the hidden cameras
comments: we went to go have a nice pub lunch at Dentry's today since it's kind of like friday. turns out Dentry's is only open for lunch on fridays. bah. so we crossed the street. and walked down a bit. to Ginger and Chilli. it's pretty good there. the ginger beef was real good. and greg had the curry vermicelli and gave me some. it was good too. the GOPs weren't that great. we just neede something to dip them in.

and Jason had:

spicy eggplanties (w/ those hot little chilis!)
from: Ginger and Chilli
price: $7.50ish
rating: &&&&.5/&&&&&
comments: Jason says, "Very tasty spicy eggplant, rice, and salad. Nothing so special about the salad, but otherwise was definately the best spicy eggplant I've had. Nice and spicy and tasty. The leftovers are sitting beside me tempting me." so Jason blew our minds today as he walked into the office with a hundred dollar umbrella. we're all like, "whoah, man" and jason was like, "hey man" and then r. walked in. so I showed him the umbrella. he wasn't too surprised. he was carrying one himself.

one of these mornings, you're gonna rise up singing

pizza
from: the company (but made at panago)
price: free!!
rating: &&&/&&&&&
listening to: Janis Joplin
comments: today we met our new owners. and we all got pizza. that's the only sure way to get everyone to go to a meeting 'round here. worked on me. the linked photo is a bit of a game. who can be the first to tell me: what it is of exactly? not the pylon. we all know what that is. but the other blurry thing? what is it??

and the rest of the company had:

same thing. lots of pizza. a whole lot. I'm rather full now.

Tuesday, November 08, 2005

apparently before Jed had left us, he wrote some poems

3 items: kung pau chicken, szechwan pork, and bitter melon
from: Yi Kou Xiang Delicious Foods
price: FREE!!! (card full up, yo)
rating: &&&&.7/&&&&&
listening to while eating: grandaddy
comments: this was a great meal. I should give it a 5, but I reserve those for the super mega extraordinary. the kungpau was really good. no peanuts. I like it better this way. and lots of chilli. mmm.. and the bitter melon was very bitter. that's some weird stuff. it's almost disgusting, but then it's delicious. not as good as when gun runnin' jeff made it.

and greg had:

3 items: kung pau chicken, beef stew and szechwan pork? I think.
from: Yi Kou Xiang Delicious Foods
price: $4.82
rating:
comments: I took a picture of greg's lunch with his new camera. since we didn't have the cable for the camera, you get to see the picture from my camera's point of view. here's what greg said about his meal, "I completely forgot to review this meal, so I will review it in hindsight. this meal was good, so good I forgot to rate whilst eating. the kung pow! chicken was spicy like a meatball but chickeny like a chicken, very good. the Stir fried veg and tofu combo was good also everything was so fresh and so clean. the beef and daikon was pretty ok but not sensational."
