the fraser and kingsway vietnamese sandwich showdown!!!!

three of us tried three different vietnamese sandwiches (bahn mi) from three different stores at the kingsway/fraser intersection. Here's the results:

from: Bale French Sandwich shop.
price: $2.25+tax
comments: this place is usually very good. although, today, we rate it the lowest. It did seem to have most meat, but to me, it tasted really dry. eric bit into a hot pepper that was extremely hot, but neither r. nor I had any in ours. odd. they also didn't use black pepper, which the other places used well. also, the bread was not as good or fresh tasting as the other places. but greg says that we should have really gotten the "number 5" which is 50 cents more, and double the meat.
rating: 3rd place.

from: Co Hong Vietnamese Sandwich and Deli Shop
price: $2.50 ( I think? - not sure because r. bought these ones)
comments: this place was interesting. as I sat at the empress bakery waiting for my sandwiches, some guy ran in, bought a bunch of buns and ran out. my first thought was that it was the guy from Co Hong getting the buns for r.'s sandwiches. I was right. that's exactly what was happening. the sandwich itself was a little different. tons of black pepper. no paté. and what seemed to be roast beef as the meat. interesting. r. picks this sandwich as his fave.
rating: 2nd place.

from: Empress Bakery / Sandwich and Deli
price: $2.25 +tax
comments: the good ol' empress. this is my usual place for these subs. and it turns out, it is also the victor of this showdown. unfortunately, they didn't use the delicious garlicy-buttery stuff again. if they had, they could have blown their competitors out of the water. instead, they just eked by, getting both eric's and my vote for best sandwich. It hink this one was too spciy for r. though. the peppers are pretty hot.
rating: 1st place!

At least the shopkeeper did not go out and hunt a pig. The second shop does not look like a sandwich place anyway. Do they sell something else? ween

uh.. sure? strange question, though.

just take the skytrain to Broadway station, then take the Beeline west to Main St. then catch a fraser bus (on kingsway) heading south. or just walk up kingsway from main and broadway.
